Hi All, me again!
This time were talking about Canoe Sprint!
What is it?
In essence sprint is a flatwater racing sport where athletes compete in canoes or kayaks over straight, marked courses on calm water (lakes, slow rivers, etc). The objective is to paddle as fast as possible over distances like 200m, 500m, or 1000m, with races typically involving multiple lanes for direct head-to-head competition.
What’s Coming Up?
Like slalom, we are hoping to send a small team (4 max) to BUCS Sprint. Regardless of BUCS attendance, we will be running some sprint sessions, in collaboration with Bath Canoe Club, next semester. Sprint introduces a new style of paddling, that can help develop power and timing, relevant to all other disciplines. These sessions will take place from the boathouse, meaning we can basically run them whenever, allowing as many people to join as possible.
Boathouse ‘come try it’ sessions – TBC, but starting next semester
BUCS – 15th to 16th March 2025
Do I have to be experienced?
As with all BUCS events, there are many different events and abilities present. So, no need to have any slalom specific experience. However, to make the most of the event due to the few numbers of spaces, some experience in a sprint boat will be required to sign up for the event.
As for the boathouse sessions, absolutely no experience is required, only the willingness keep smiling when you inevitably fall in!
How do I take part?
I have put out a general sprint interest form on the website to get an idea of numbers, this will help me plan out BUCS options as there are only so many people we can take. https://bathunicanoe.uk/
Watch this space for further ‘come try it’ signups and more information.
